Mangolane Prairie Grey: The is one of my project Greys in my yard and it is a Sweetness Grey x Joe Goode Grey cross which i am now developing as a strain. So far, I have shown eight times, and produced seven wins. The lone loss is still debatable in my eyes, as that stag was matched against a much bigger and older opponent. He was actually well ahead in the fight until one perfectly timed punch turned the lights out. They are on the smaller side. While they are not ugly, they are not the flashiest birds either. They are also not the strongest chickens physically, and they are among the easiest families in my yard to tame. Yet despite these seemingly ordinary traits, they possess qualities that have made me appreciate them more with every showing. They are exceptionally smart, with excellent instincts for positioning and when the going gets tough, they seem to find another gear and discover ways to win. It’s almost as if they have a chip on their shoulder, which is probably why I have a soft spot for them. Because of these qualities, I have decided to focus on preserving and strengthening the traits that i believe made them successful. My plan is to continue developing this bloodline and eventually make it the flagship Grey family that represents the Mangolane brand. After considerable thought, I have decided to call them Prairie Greys—a name meant to evoke the image of wild chickens camouflaging and moving through open grasslands, with their native, rugged appearance and their soft yellowish-gray coloration. Both stags pictured are 2x winners, currently in breeding pens being mated back to their Joe Goode mama/aunts. Their third full brother, also a 2x winner, sadly didn’t recover after his second showing, but fortunately bred a few chicks before then.
